  1. Mix it with a little lime, vodka and cranberry, that make a great drink. J/K kinda Mix it with Lime. Lime and ginger make a great pair.
  2. I get ash on every batch of soap. I also use RBO in every batch except Castille. Even my castille ashes. Maybe it's the altitude... Hey e, very pretty soap, make sure you don't send me any.
  3. Which CLV are you using that doesn't discolor?
  4. Try pouring when it's like pancake batter, almost room temp.
  5. When I was nursing, La Leche recommended anhydrous lanolin. It was especially helpful when I had to start using the breast pump when I went back to work.
  6. It sounds like marketing lingo to me. ScentedGrace, what is a body care FO?
  7. It really doesn't matter for FO load how many fluid ounces your jar holds. If you know that jar holds 6.6oz by weight then only calculate using this weight. The only time that you need to worry about how many fluid oz. is when you are weighing out your wax for melting, to know how much to melt for how many jars. This is way easier than you are making it.
  8. I did that about 2 months ago for about the 4th time. I've been soaping over 1 1/2 years and still do that occasionally. Usually when the swirls are perfect.
  9. Yes they do. Try to make sure that when you put it under the surface that you tilt it to get as much air out of the "bell" as you can. Otherwise you'll get bubbles in the soap. Practice on water or something...It doesn't burn when it gets on your skin...
  10. Ashley, be careful of cats when your lye is cooling outside. I'm always terrified that an animal will try to drink it. The lye only fumes for a couple of minutes. About the time it would take to go outside, mix the lye, smoke a cig, then bring it back in the house...the fumes should be done by then.
  11. Wasn't that your sig line CareBear?
  12. Try to check out this page when you are using Peak FO's. It's old, in the archives, but unless they've changed the formulas this is a great resource. http://www.candletech.com/archivedforum/YaBB.cgi.195.html
  13. I ran this thru the-sage.com calc and it says 7.89oz lye. That looks fine. Sometimes if the soap is still too soft it will be kinda crumbly and it will also crumble if it's too lye heavy. 12-24 hours is a general guideline but you have to gauge that for yourself based on your recipe. If it's too soft, it's fine to let it stay in the mold for another day, or longer. Always, always, always run recipes thru a soap calc. Never rely on someone else. There are many recipes out there with the wrong lye amounts posted. This one happened to be correct.
  14. I never, ever, ever peek at my soap and all of it ashes. I think it's the RBO. You can touch the soap now...Most of the lye has been used up and it's safe to handle. I find that if I use a soap within the first few days the soap doesn't rinse off well and then my hands feel very very dry. I always wait at least 3 days. Handling should be safe right now though. Good job.
  15. It probably won't zap to the touch. If it's gonna zap you have to taste it. Either wet your finger and rub it on the soap then taste or just stick your tongue on the soap. If it zaps, let it sit a few more days and try again. It takes a few days for the saponification to be complete. Crumbly many times does signal lye heavy but not always.
  16. Rice bran oil is liquid at room temp. Let us know, I'd be interested to hear about them.
  17. I keep liquid soap in my son's bathroom. The only place I can find non anti-bacterial refill jugs is at Costco. We don't use the anti bacterial here just for the reason Bill Nye says. I haven't bought it in several years.
  18. Natural is a word that is not regulated by the FDA. I pay no attention at all to any claim that says natural.
  19. I only use flavor oils for the scent, not the taste. IMO, if you make it sweet and tasty they will lick their lips. That causes their lips to get dry. They will blame your lip balm for making their lips dry.
  20. This is in the B&B faq's section. Online Lye Suppliers
  21. They are the same exact thing. Just weigh it as usual. At Soapers Choice, the difference in cost is $.26/lb. I use about 8oz in each batch of soap I make. That makes that batch cost an extra $.13 cents. I get 16 bars out of each batch so the PKO is costing me less than $.01 extra per bar. That's one penny. The first PKO I bought was the solid stuff. It was so hard to break up and get out of the bucket I swore I'd never go back, and for less than a penny per bar it is worth it to me.
  22. Mauimom, that's great. I remember the first perfect candles and soaps I made. What a feeling. BTW, there is no L in Votives...FYI.
  23. I keep reading about how the lye melts the silk but I'm not sure that it doesn't just break it down. If lye is so caustic, it should be able to break down the silk without heat. I don't have time today but I might just try this weekend...I could make some lye water up and let it sit overnight, then add silk. See if it still breaks down.
