  1. regardless of what you sell them as..i feel I had to point out that your wicks are far too close to the edge of your jar - they need to be much closer together. Wicks that close to the sides of the jar can a) cause black soot and B) overheat the glass enough for it to explode.

Sorry to be the one to tell you but I guess that's why we're all here huh?

  2. that can't be right -where have you found moulds for $1 each? If each mould was around £2.20 (cos you're getting 6 for £15??) then that means you would be buying them for $1 each in the USA?

its a darn site cheaper for me to order 6 moulds from the US than get them in the UK.

I'm after 3 square moulds 3" x 3 1/2" and 3 round same size. The only place so far I've found them in the UK' date=' would cost me £45 for the 6. In the states its about £15-16 plus shipping.

When is the UK going to wake up to the fact, theres lots of us out there wanting supplies.

    Sorry just having a rant[/quote']

  3. I understand, but you must have an idea of you want 8oz to start with of each scent or 16oz? If you are opening a shop then little 50mls won't be enough will it?

My manufacturer supplies oils in 1kg bottles, which is just over 2lbs. Is that too much or too little?

  4. thanks everyone :grin2: Wicking that tumbler was a total bugger but if anyone is interested it was a CD 20 but RRD 55 performed OK, so they would be good starting points on 70/30 blend ecosoya/paraffin with 1.5oz per pound good quality FO. Tumbler is 3 inches across.

  5. Hi' date='

I've asked this question before and after varying the pouring temps, thought I'd sorted it.

Just poured some eggnog votives, poured at 185 with 195 repour (same as normally do) but these are covered in pin pricks.

Is there anything you can do to get rid of them, without changing pouring temps. Or do you have to change pouring temps occasionally depending on the fo?

    Its straight paraffin btw

    thanks[/quote']

pour slower and tap the sides of the moulds with the wax in. Pin pricks are simply airbubbles trapped against the side of the mould. try to pour smoothly without sloshing and then tap tap tap.

  6. Good for you! How do you think the CD wick compares in scent throw to the RRD?

the scent throw on the CD and RRD are about the same - better than any other wick I tried including LX, Eco & Hemp. The CD mushrooms more than the RRD - but on a power burn, the mushrooming on both candles was the same except the RRD left the rim of the glass black and the CD didn't.

Also - the RRD 55 started to struggle in the lower half of the tumbler - when there was only about quarter of the wax left the RRD55 flame got a lot smaller and altho there was a full melt-pool the flame just looked a bit small.

  7. WOW!!! Those are so simple, elegant...just stunning. You did an awesome job...love the box, the label. What is the scent called? Describe it for us since we can't scratch and sniff??? Please. Ginger

The scent doesn't have a name - I created a ton of blends for them and they picked and chose what they wanted until they got it right. It has Black Vetiver, Cedar and Fig in it, as well as tiny touches of other base and top notes including a splash of citrus and male cologne-type. It smells woody, deep and earthy with a fruity/lemony "twang"

Hope that makes sense - it has about 8 or 9 different things in it - but I don't know the ratios as the manufacturer put it together for me based on the tons of samples I sent them from the shortlist that the client chose.

  8. What can I say but WOW! Great job Nat. They look great, very simple and classy - and expensive LOL.

Glad you finally found the right wick :yay:

    Anjie,x.

yea, they cost a hell of a lot to make but I think they're going to be selling them for £20 or more so they should get a pretty good profit. The boxes were outrageously expensive because they are so thick and rigid - but that's what they wanted. The printing on the glass was a nightmare too - had to get the logo professionally printed onto transparancy, then sent to a screen maker to make the screens, then sent to the printer to print the glass.

I think I deserve a giant bar of dairy milk.

  9. Thought I'd best update!

CD20 is my wick of choice. It burns simply beautifully with my wax blend and fragrance. Thank god I'm only pouring one fragrance in this tumbler for the time being - I don't think my little ticker could take another round of this testing.

Results of this testing are in the candle gallery.

  10. I don't post much here so thought I'd share with you the results of several months of hard work.

This company wanted a glass tumbler candle in a box. That was only specification I had, but they wanted it to be top quality and exclusive. The only thing they provided me with was their logo.

I had to source the ridgid box and have it made especially, including choosing the colour of the paper and also the silver foiled logo on the front. I then had to find the tumblers, and have the company's logo printed directly onto the glass in thick, high quality black ink.

The fragrance was exclusively blended for this company by my fragrance manufacturer and is a trade secret - but suffice to say it is simply gorgeous.

After months of testing wicks - I finally found the perfect one for this particular scent and wax combo - but that story is on another thread in the vegetable wax candle making area!

So anyway. I finished pouring 2000 candles today and here they are!!!

  11. Okay the fragrances my customer wants is lavender, vanilla and gardenia. They have to be good quality with a strong hot throw and gd cold throw also. If any one wants to pm me what prices you can do on what qty's that would be fab!! also afta pillar moulds so if i could get sum at the same time saves on courrier and halfs the work load -i think LOL

Im personally afta some realy nice warm and rich scents for the fall so any suggestions would be gr8!!

    Thanks guys:grin2:

I've got a vanilla that will knock your socks off. how much u need?

  12. oh nat list them please:) you have my interest going, in the wicks packaging FO, and some of the moulds:)especially the bananas:)

will do. i have to pour 1000 candles over the next couple of weeks, and do my accounts by the end of july - the accounts involve a stock take so im hoping to have a list of stuff that's gotta go by the end of july - will let you know.

  13. I'm gonna have to do the same, I've got golf balls, easter bunnys, easter eggs, cream dollops, strawberries, raspberries, muffins, hearts, bananas, banana slices, orange slices, chocolates, pineapple rings, beehives, bee skeps and god knows what else. I've got sundae dishes, banana split dishes, mugs, ramekins, icing pipers and wicks by the hundreds.

Doing a stock take soon and i'm tellin' ya - there is a TON of stuff I don't need, including containers, packaging, fragrance oils and moulds.

  14. I agree - those moulds are in a complete mess. That's OK if you want to clean them all up but the fact that the lady never bothered to clean them means that she never bothered to look after them. FO eats into everything so all the moulds should be clean.

Not only that - but you can see how shoddy she is by the fact that she's got votives still stuck on the votive pins and not bothered to take them off.

The only thing you need to ask yourself wick - is do you really NEED all this stuff? The mistake I made when first starting up was to buy every kind of sillicone mould I could find - I spent hundreds and hundreds on them. Guess where they are? In the cupboard un-used and I've now got to sell them all for a lot less than I paid.

Don't make the mistake of thinking that when you first start your business you need to have every sort of pie, sundae, bakery candle, wax melt style and shape of candle - cos you don't. I stopped selling my "novelty" candles made with sillicone moulds a long time ago because everyone went "oooh look at that" but never actually bought them. In fact - all of my bakery scents are the WORST sellers - people just say "it'll make me hungry" and go for the plain candle in citrus scent in a jar.

Just think of the QUALITY stuff you can buy for £100 - and that's the minimum amount you will pay for all that crap off ebay.

Get yourself some brand new votive moulds - I suggest having at least 24 or 48 of them. Buy yourself some wick from the USA instead of having to rely on eco's and LX brand from the UK - start with CD, RRD and Hemp cos they're all lovely. Go to Tescos and buy yourself a set of tea towels, a 12 pack of kitchen towel, 10 wooden spoons, 5 large glass pyrex jugs, some super quality scissors for cutting wicks or even spend your £100 on a presto pot, and then save another £80 for the transformer.

Instead of buying a ton of moulds that'll end up sat in a cupboard, stock yourself up on essentials like the towels, jugs, spoons etc and perhaps just one or two good new sillicone moulds to play with!

  15. Thanks Natt - i actually meant 20kg for delivery but missed the 0 off- duh -

I definately want some, but i cant order till a few weeks- had time off work for uni exams last month so didnt get paid this month- so having to limit myself on the candle supplies. Which i am sure everyone will agree is an impossible task when you want to try so much.

no worries. delivery is £6.60 up to 25kgs and my courier comes on thursdays.

    nat

  16. Natt- if i bought 20kg of paffafin does the price per kg come down- is the price the same for container and parrafin? Also whats the delivery costs for say 2kg/ Thanks

I buy it in 50kg lots, and the price I gave you is the price I pay per kg when buying 50kgs. Therefore, for 20kgs the price doesn't go down. you'd need to hit the next price tier which is 75kgs or 100kgs I think.

2kgs may be OK to send via royal mail, i'd have to check - but by courier for anything between 1 and 30kg it's £6.60.

    Nat
