Charley
I just came across this article and wondered if there is anyone who makes their own or do you always purchase it? If you make your own, does it work out good?TIAhttp://www.pvsoap.com/recipe_colloidal_oatmeal.htm
TexasBrat
I make my own. It's just oatmeal (not instant) ground up finely.http://colloidaloatmeal.com/make_your_own_colloidal_oatmeal.htm Edited March 10, 2013 by TexasBrat
Charley
Thank you Texas! Do you use it in CP without any problems?
8-GRAN-ONES
i have used both..it is hard to get the oats as fine as you can buy...the colloidal oatmeal..unless you have a flour mill...any way it is for me...
TexasBrat
Thank you Texas! Do you use it in CP without any problems?Yes. I mostly use it in a form that is not as fine but have used both with no problem. I have an electronic chopper that gets it fine.

Barbara AL
What about using oat flourhttp://www.vitacost.com/bobs-red-mill-whole-grain-oat-flour?csrc=GPF-PA-039978003119&ci_gpa=pla&ci_kw=&ci_origin=mobile&ci_src=17588969&ci_sku=039978003119&gclid=CJbPgqOY87UCFQ2nnQod1kkA5A
8-GRAN-ONES
Barb..that is a good price...i know red mill is a very good brand..
soycrazy
I use my blender it's over 400 watts and it seems to do the trick but I noticed with wheat and oat flour even companies can't get it fine like the colloidal. Bobs Red Mill does the best at it though
Charley
I think I'll grind some oats up and make a 1# test batch to see what happens. Can't hurt, that's for sure! Thank you all
Candybee
I had been making mine by grinding it in my blender, then sifting it in a flour sifter to weed out the larger particles, then regrinding what was left in the sifter. After all the grinding I get a fine soft silky flour. But it doesn't matter. Its still makes CP soap thats scratchy. And yes I have been using whole rolled oats and not the instant kind. My flour comes out looking just like on that link for 'making your own colloidal oatmeal.' The difference is they are using it in the bath and not in CP.So I took someone's suggestion and started using baby oatmeal cereal. The difference is huge. The baby oatmeal makes a non abrasive soft soap with all the benefits of oatmeal. However, I still am not fully satisfied as even baby cereal is not 100% oatmeal. It has other ingredients in it and I want 100% oatmeal.I had been thinking of trying something like oat flour and Red Mill did come to mind. Does it have any scrubiness to it? I only want a soft exfoliation and nothing that feels scratchy. Edited March 12, 2013 by Candybee
Barbara AL
I bought a bag to try last week I put some of the oat flour in my saltbars yesterday it didn't feel scratchy when I felt it nice and smooth like flour.

Charley
Hi Barb, Thanks for the info!! I decided to do the same thing but I haven't received my order yet. Can't wait to try the oat flour out. I tried the other methods or grinding and then re-grinding but just can't seem to get the particles soft and smooth enough plus they end up sinking to the bottom of the container. Candybee
Just got back from the store today with a box of Aveeno colloidal oatmeal. It was on sale for $5. There are 8 packets in it. Looks like I may be able to make 2-3 soap batches per packet. Don't know til I give it a try. Opened one of the packets and have to say the oatmeal inside has a wonderfully soft powder like texture. Like baby powder. Much finer than home ground in my grinder. Will have to wait and see if its still scratchy in the finished soap. But after feeling the texture I'm thinking this may work out fine. Its amazing all the claims they make on the box considering its just finely ground oatmeal. Wonder how many average people buying Aveeno understand its oatmeal and nothing but oatmeal. The box reads like its an exclusive upscale spa treatment. judys
I grind baby oatmeal in a coffee bean grinder. It is not scratchy. Sell lots. People love it. I make lots of soap and this is one of my best sellers. I put it in my goat milk soap.
Candybee
So far I've made two batches (10 lbs) of soap with the Aveeno colloidal oatmeal. I love this stuff! I am so glad someone posted about it in another forum.I made a lemongrass and lime shaving soap and an oatmeal, milk & honey soap with it. The Aveeno oatmeal is a dream to use. I have only opened one packet so far and use 5-6 tbs. There is enough left for another batch. That means I can get 24 soap batches out of it. I make 5lb batches at a time so thats a lot of soap. So cost wise it works for me.Anyone interested I got it at my local grocers in the bath and lotion section.
ProudMarineMom
Is colloidal oatmeal the only ingredient? On the net it says Active Ingredient so wasn't sure. Wonder if it's any different than the oat flour I already have....
Candybee
I checked the ingredients label. Its only ingredient listed is oatmeal and it says "active ingredient: oatmeal." So I am happy about that. Now I can't wait to try out one of the soaps I made. The soaps are curing now.
ProudMarineMom
Thanks for checking. From what I've read, colloidal may be ground even finer than the oat flour. May need to grab a box and try it in some soap.
Candybee
Whatever it is-- it's a super fine grind. Its just like baby powder.
chuck_35550
Aveeno works just fine but careful not to add too much or you get soap cake. It seems to cut the later a bit as well so easy does it (I use about 1/2 tsp pp of oils). HTHSteve
