Clay is porous and so if it isn't glazed at least on the inside the wax would be soaked up by the clay.If someone took an unglazed piece and then painted it or sprayed it in anyway I would not think that is safe to use for a candle. It would get too hot and may release fumes.The glazes in pottery making are fired at several thousand degrees, so the heat from a candle will not release any fumes.You can not spray into an unglazed pot, it has to be done when making it, and then fired in a kiln.
