DebL
Has anyone had any success making candles in coconut half shells? I'm trying to add some different types of containers and thought this would be neat to try. I am wondering how to prepare the shell - if you need to apply some type of fire retardent to it. Luci
Where did you find some? I thought about this before but couldn't find any.
Scented
if you need to apply some type of fire retardent to it. Probably a good idea, unless you were into bonfires etc.
DebL
Luci, I haven't ordered them yet, but CS carries them. Their instruction is to line the shell with tin foil, but not sure how that would look.
Luci
Sounds like it would look like crap!
idahospud
I made them one time, and I put 3 layers of Mod Podge, on them first, and they burnt fine.
DebL
What is Mod Podge?
Scented
Go to Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby etc. Look in the paint section, miscellaneous. It's there. It's like a glue used for decoupage.
jhepp7gw2
I saw this in one of the candle instruction books and they lined it with real gold foil and it looked really cool. I dont know how safe this is but it looks great!
Sharon in KY
Years ago I had a candle in a coconut shell. Let it burn all night, forgot about it, was in the bathroom. Well the smoke alarm went off, smoke was bellowing out into the hall. The shell was on fire and flames were licking my shower curtain. Thank God for smoke alarms or we might have all been gone. Maybe some sand or something to put flame out when it gets to the bottom.
DebL
Thanks so much. I will look for it this weekend.
cindym
I think tin foil is a really bad idea. It does catch on fire.
SilverOrchid
Im glad I saw this post, I think I'll skip the coconuts, I was looking at them this past week at candles and supplies. Flaming coconuts? NO thanks LOL
creativegems
You could put a couple glass beads on the wick so it wouldn't burn down all the way. Janet
pdevine
I am testing these now and so far so good, but haven't burned one all the way down yet. I applied 3 coats of decopodge to mine. Will see what happens once it reaches the bottom and post then. HTH Portia
