obie1
Just registered today. Read through the newbie site. Lots of good suggestions. Do have a question. I just retired and started making soy candles as a hobbie. My container candles are coming out great. I'm having difficulty with pillars. I'm following directions for heating and pouring. However, they have large cracks after they have cooled. What am I doing wrong (or not doing)? They also have some discoloration.
Candle Man
Can you post a picture, that will help us help you better.ETA - What wax do you use, any additives, how much FO, what temp did you pour at, how long did you waite before you un-molded the pillar? obie1
Thanks for the quick reply. I used Nature Wax Pillar blend with no additives. I used 1 1/2 tsp. of FO for 3 lbs. I poured at 165-170. I waited about 6 hours before removing. (I could see the large cracks before removal) I can't give you a photo, sorry. candlesprite7
I get cracks when the work area is cold...like during the winter. I work in my basement and we dont heat it...ugh! Try wrapping a towel around your mold before you pour to keep it from cooling too fast. Sometimes I put a styrofoam cooler over the mold to help hold the heat in a bit longer. Candle Man
Like Kim said average Fo in a candle is 1oz/ 1 Lb of wax with a max of 1.5oz FO per 1Lb of wax.
