Castille with sunflower oil

Recommended Posts

Castile means soap that is mostly olive oil. It has to be olive. No way that you can sub sunflower for olive as a base oil. The properties are too different. Rice Bran oil makes a good OO sub. Sunflower has a short shelf like and is prone to DOS. I use it at 20% or less.

I've seen castile as defined as simply all vegetable oil (no animal fats) as well as all olive oil.

But I agree that you wouldn't want to sub sunflower for the olive in a traditional castile-type bar because the soap properties won't be what people are expecting.
