KristineG
I'm not sure what I stumbled on but, I was checking my webstats and I noticed a link www.whois.sc so I clicked on it. I entered my domain name. You wouldn't believe what I found. Once you enter your domain name, look in the first box labeled "front page information". Midway in that box you'll see a link labeled: Wiki article on (your domain name). Click on that link! Someone had listed their candle business as the owner of mine which means that if someone actually clicked on my link, it was routed to their site! What was also disturbing is that it was my logo! They had changed all the information about my site and also had porn sites listed as my related domains. Now, once you see this, if the information is incorrect, click on the edit TAB associated with this page, go in and change the info to what it should be and delete what you don't want. What shocked me was that I didn't even have to register as a member or do anything to prove I was the owner and was able to change it. I now check all of my domain names each day. sudsnwicks
I now check all of my domain names each day.Sigh... that would be kind of a pain, isn't it? I wonder why someone would do this. What do they have to gain. I don't think the average customer would come across your site via a whois search. Usually they would find you from a search engine search. Because they would have had to know your URL to look you up in a whois search, in which case they don't need to do that if they already know your URL to go shopping at. KristineG
Yes it is a pain. I don't kinow why or how. If you don't want to check yours, don't. I'm just telling you what happened to me. What I don't understand is in my web stats, it clearly shows whois.sc came into my site and that's the only reason I initially checked. I wanted to know what whoi.sc was and that's when I found my other site with incorrect information.Edited to add: This was done on one of my domains that I don't use. My domain that I use for my canlde business was fine.

sudsnwicks
You are right, of course, that it's up to each of us to decide if we want to check daily or even periodically. I just don't understand why these folks would do this and end up creating extra work for us. Because really, what do they have to gain. You need to know the URL to perform a whois search. Someone knowing the URL could just go directly to your site to look at it, there's no need to go through a whois.

Di_in_AZ
I have my domain registered by proxy. It keeps you anonymous so when people look up the domain information, the only thing that shows is the company that registered the domain for you. They will not give that information out. Stops anyone from messing with it either. It does cost a couple dollars a year, but well worth it in my opinion.

charity4candles
I've also had that on my stats several times lately. You can track the ip address of the person that uses it on your site I (my lawyer has) found that it is belonging to some of the same malicious guest book signing that I've had going on. I had no idea, however, about the wiki thing, so thanks for the heads-up!! I hope you can put a stop to it...a lawyer works best
