addicted2candles
I want to start making fake foods like strawberry shortcake and banana splits. I've been reading up on it and lots of times it calls for gel wax to glue or stick the pieces of wax together. For example to help stick the strawberries on your shortcake you'd pour a gel topping on them. Most of the instructions I've read do not explain what type of gel to use. I've emailed a few people who've written these instructions, one stated medium density.Do any of you make fake foods out of paraffin or soy wax and use gel wax with it? If so what gel wax do you normally use?
jenscandles
I made the embeds out of paraffin wax and used Penreco medium density gel. I made a lot of fruit pies, and also some preserves. Also made a lot of beer candles. I've since stopped because where I was the gel candles did not move well. The beers did, but I was selling them to the group of men I worked with back then. NewOrleansLady
I also used to make the foods with gel and stopped for lack of sales. I used medium for 95% of my projects.
Luci
Same situation as the posters above me--lack of sales. The only time I sell any are at festivals.I mostly use medium density gel for the type of candles you mentioned.
Swiecarz
If your project consists of only soy or paraffin, then the only reason to use gel is when you want to add a glazed appearance. For Strawberry Shortcake, use a heat gun to lightly soften the cake/icing one small area at a time, and embed your strawberries in each area until you've achieved your desired effect. Once the wax cools, the strawberries will stay in place.
