candlemama
I would really like to learn more about the soap making process, specifically the function of fatty acids and what happens to those acids during saponification. I feel like I am spinning my wheels trying to figure out what oils may or may not make a good bar of soap by using SoapCalc and reading others' recipes (which is helpful, but I want more info!). I've seen only a few recommendations for books and websites that get more into the nuts and bolts of soapmaking. When you first started to learn, where did you go? CareBear
this might help a little - http://www.canis-art.com/soaping.htmbut I think what you really want to know is what each saponified fatty acid contributes to soap. for that I'd refer you to http://www.soapcalc.net/info/soapqualities.asp - it's not perfect but it's pretty good. chuck_35550
"Scientific Soapmaking" by Kevin M. Dunn (Amazon)"Soap and Other Obsessions" by Zonella Gould and Sally Trew (Amazon)"Smart Soapmaking" by Anne L. Watson (Amazon)"The Elegant Art of Handmade Soap" by Dr. Robert S. McDaniel (Amazon)I would recommend starting with the last two books and then take on the other two. soulshine
I second the miller site! And of course looking through this forim and the other soapmaking forums yields TONS of information.... Just about any question you can think of someone has asked before. It's just a matter of finding it! Good Luck!
