barncat
The local historical socierty called today and wanted to see if I would like to demonstrate candle dipping at their Heritage Festival. ANyone ever do something like this? Everything I have is electric :undecided
rjdaines
I think this has been discussed before here and if I recall, the consensus was that using an open flame around melted wax was too much of a safety risk.
beekeeper_sd
Don't they have electrical sites available? I have thought about doing this but thought it would be a PITA, i.e. bugs and dirt in your candles, time to wait on customers while dipping candles, the MESS, etc.
Chefmom
You could just ask them if you can use an electric pot to keep the water & wax at the proper temp or if they REALLY need it to be a kettle over the open fire thing. Being a public festival I don't think their insurance would cover paraffin and open flames in a demo. Just mention to the crowd that you are using a different method for safety purposes, but the dipping is the same.
ChrisR
Civil War era would be dipping beeswax to be authentic.
